Apex International Energy considers social commitment at the core of our responsibility as a reliable operator. We are a part of the communities in which we operate and expect to partner with those communities to contribute to sustainable human, economic and social development. Our ESG Strategy focuses our social responsibility initiatives on three primary beneficiaries: Ras El Hekma Central Hospital, Resala and Hands Along the Nile Development Services.

Ras El Hekma Central Hospital

Apex began its Bedouin outreach initiative in 2022 through support of the Ras El Hekma Central Hospital, which provides medical services to the 50,000 Bedouin residents in the village of Ras El Hekma and surrounding communities in the proximity of the Company’s operations in the Westen Desert. The hospital receives more than 100 cases daily, in addition to emergency cases resulting from severe accidents. During November and December 2022 in Phase I of the initiative, Apex raised the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) capacity and effectiveness by providing modern medical equipment for six ICU rooms.  In 2023 during Phase II of the initiative, Apex contributed to upgrading the housing facilities for medical staff and providing household appliances.

Apex’s contributions have been recognized by the hospital director who wrote to the Company in September 2023, “The administration of Ras El-Hekma Central Hospital extends its sincere thanks and deep gratitude for your generous donations that support the hospital and help it provide service in the best possible way . . . Your generous donation of intensive care equipment has also contributed to receiving accidents that occurred on Matrouh International Road.”   These accidents included serious bus accidents involving more than 50 injuries over a 72-hour period.

Resala

Resala was established in 1999 at Cairo University and has now grown into one of Egypt’s largest charities, with 60 branches spread throughout Egypt.  Each year more than 200,000 thousand volunteers serve millions of Egyptians in about 30 volunteer activities, including:  caring for orphans; helping the blind, the deaf, and children with special needs; blood donations; poverty alleviation; and literacy training.

The support Apex provides is both financial and through employees volunteering their time.  In 2023, Apex successfully helped provide clothes and food for 38 boys at a Resala orphanage in Helwan, and most importantly helped put a smile on their faces. The children are supported until they are 18 years old, and the orphanage secures the children’s education to enable them to begin their adult lives and build their futures.  Apex looks forward to continued support of the Resala orphanage.

Hands Along the Nile

Hands Along the Nile Development Services (HANDS) forges lasting partnerships between Americans and Egyptians in order to increase intercultural understanding and support Egyptians in their efforts to raise the quality of life through economic development and social services.

In September 2023, HANDS shared Mario’s story.  Like many young Egyptians, Mario, from Malawy in the governorate of Minya, had been facing long-term unemployment, which left him unable to provide for himself.  Knowing he needed to make a change so that he could fulfill his dream of starting a family, Mario came to a HANDS-sponsored training center, where he received job-skills instruction that helped transform his life.

Mario developed technical skills in cell phone maintenance and, after learning the vocation, was able to open his own mobile phone shop and maintenance facility in his community.  Thanks to HANDS, Mario has finally started to earn a living and build a more stable life for himself.  Now he can look forward to getting married and starting a family of his own.

Apex has supported HANDS through Rod Eichler, a member of our Board of Directors, who has served as a member of the board of directors of HANDS for the past eight years.  Tom Maher, our President and CEO, will join the HANDs board of directors when Mr. Eichler steps down in February 2024 after having reached his term limit.

Al Amal Project

In addition to Ras El Hekma hospital, Resala and HANDS, Apex is also a sponsor and participant in Al Amal (Hope), a training program preparing geology and geophysical college students in Egypt for work in the oil and gas industry.  Apex Lead Geologist Eng. Ali Abdel Halim has provided online sessions in “Petroleum system and basin modelling.” Students go through an interview process to be selected for the training and focused project exercises on specialized workstations.
